Becoming a business owner usually stems from some type of desire to be free of creative constraints within a traditional workforce., at least that was the case for me. When I was working for the insurance industry the agency was captive which did not allow me to actually help clients beyond the products that company offered. Similar to my current role in government where I became the overachiever that got the first HR Directors position in the history of the organization with the nice glass corner office, thinking finally I can make that difference. Well everything i want to do for the employees is hampered by either the employees lack of engagement, not having funds because of the structure or my boss simply telling me no. Honestly it was all politics despite the industry.
In both instances I was compelled or willed into working for myself to gain some type of satisfaction. I remember getting licensed with as many insurance companies as I could offering everything from life, individual health to pet insurance. While I was earning my Bachelors I even added some bookkeeping and tax preparation on a small scale for diversity of my product line. Without taking a breath I started on my Masters even taking a graduate certificate course at the same time to gain more knowledge for my employer. I had it all figured out with my fancy business plan, marketing ideas and beautiful office space with ceiling to floor glass doors, (yes I like glass). I was driving down Satisfaction Boulevard when all of a sudden that smooth paved ride drastically changed to a rough, bumpy gravel road.
Seriously REALITY CHECK! I hit that gravel in my expensive car and blew three tires in an area that had no cell phone service to call AAA. I mean I did not understand, I thought I looked the part, I had some clients, my marketing seemed to be decent and had a pretty consistent stream of referrals, what am I missing. I know that Assets = Liabilities + Equity but what I did not realize was how important networking with other SBO's was to my business. Here's a thought for you Net-Profit is dependent upon Working to build relationships. I was so caught up in making a difference and looking the part that I missed how to keep that steady profit, which put me at a loss in more ways than one. I don't really like social media but I do like seeing numbers in the black and not the red. Learn from my mistake, get out there join groups and build your client base. Snap, Tweet, Friend whatever it takes to get your business name and products in front of the right people.
I cant wait to meet you :)
